Huw Edwards, Music Director & Conductor

Bernstein: Overture to Candide

Copland: Down a Country Lane

Glazunov: Violin Concerto (guest artist: Felicity James, violin)

Daugherty: Route 66

Debussy: La Mer (The Sea)

The Olympia Symphony’s “Highways & Byways” season opens with a concert featuring music by three notable American composers: 2018 is the centenary of the great Leonard Berstein’s birth, so in tribute we will perform the peppy Overture to Candide; our 66th Season begged programming the energetic Route 66 by Michael Daugherty; and we get off the highway for a back-road amble via Aaron Copland’s miniature Down a Country Lane. The evocative La Mer (The Sea) by French composer Claude Debussy will be performed, and we are thrilled to welcome Seattle phenom, Felicity James to the Capitol City for Glazunov’s Melodic Violin Concerto.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission (now also known as “ArtsWA”), and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Concert Co-Sponsor: Olympic Dermatology and Laser Clinic, and Fairchild Record Search

Guest Artist Sponsor: R.L. Ray Violin Shop
